Read Across America Day: Local Bookstores And Libraries Near Chattanooga

Dr. Seuss is one doctor kids of all ages want to visit. It's only appropriate that Dr. Seuss's birthday has been designated as Read Across America Day. Join our real estate agents in celebrating on Monday, March 2, with a visit to one of these wonderful bookstores and libraries around Chattanooga.

1. Star Line Books - 1467 Market St., Suite 106, Chattanooga, TN 37402

While retail shopping continues to move to big-box and online stores, Star Line Books proudly remains the only independent bookstore near Chattanooga homes for sale. The shop's name is a tribute to Star Lowe, its founder, and owner, as well as the historic Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel across the street. In addition to carrying a great selection of literature, poetry, and non-fiction titles, Star Line Books hosts book launches and signings, author readings, and other enjoyable literary events. Hours are 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

2. Winder Binder Gallery & Bookstore - 40 Frazier Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37405

With its funky retro vibe, Winder Binder Gallery & Bookstore is a perfect place to lose yourself in on a rainy day. The shop began its life as a folk art gallery, and along the way, it added books, records, and even a partnership with Chattanooga Football Club. Check out fun features such as Blind Date, which offers a selection of books in brown paper wrappers with intriguing descriptions written on the cover. Winder Binder is open 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily except Sunday when the doors open at noon.

3. McKay Books - 7734 Lee Hwy., Chattanooga, TN 37421

McKay Books was created under the concept of a free enterprise library where customers could obtain inexpensive second-hand books and return them for credit on more books. The model was so successful that the shop expanded its offerings to include used board and video games, CDs, DVDs, and select electronics. Look for the free box outside the front door, which holds "rescue" items that didn't meet McKay's criteria but can still find a good home. Visit McKay's from 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday.

4. A Little Bookish - 8898 Old Lee Hwy., Suite 110, Ooltewah, TN 37363

Want your kids to fall in love with reading? Take them on an outing to A Little Bookish, a charming family-owned bookstore right down the street from Ooltewah homes for sale. The shop features cozy areas where you can read aloud to your kids as well as family-friendly events such as Story & Play Time. A Little Bookish also hosts several book clubs devoted to different genres and age groups. Hours are 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon - 5 p.m. Saturday.

5. Chattanooga Public Library - 1001 Broad St., Chattanooga, TN 37402

Today's libraries go beyond mere book repositories to serve as multi-resource community centers. In addition to hard-cover and e-books, Chattanooga Public Library offers WiFi and computer access, mobile printing, passport services, kids' activities, movie nights, special interest groups, and even tool loans. The downtown branch is open 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Check the website for other locations.
